Jay Van Vark hired as Nicholls’ 10th Head Volleyball Coach

first_imgTHIBODAUX, La. – Nicholls Director of Athletics Matt Roan announced Thursday that Jay Van Vark has been selected as Nicholls State University’s 10th Head Volleyball Coach, pending approval from the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors.”Coach Van Vark’s resume speaks for itself, and it became obvious through the interview process and when we had him on campus that he was the right person at the right time for our volleyball program,” Roan said. “He articulated in great detail his plan to build a championship-contending program. He has recruited at the highest level, developed talent at each stop in his career, and his knowledge of the game is second to none. We are so excited to get him here, watch him build his staff and make an instant positive impact on our student-athletes and the community.”Van Vark takes over the helm in Thibodaux after successful stints as an assistant at four Division I stops, including Grand Canyon University, The Ohio State University, San Diego State University and UC-Santa Barbara, in addition to a wealth of experience with USA Volleyball.”First and foremost I’d like to thank [Nicholls President] Jay Clune, Athletic Director Matt Roan and his entire senior team for giving me this opportunity here at Nicholls,” Van Vark said. “I’m thrilled about joining this program and Colonel Country. The Southland Conference has a proud history, and we are aiming to rise and compete at the top of the conference.”Van Vark was instrumental in the Buckeyes’ unexpected Sweet 16 appearance in 2014 when Ohio State was ranked 80th in the country during the preseason. Those results were mirrored at San Diego State in 2012 when the Aztecs recorded their first-ever Mountain West Championship and undefeated season at home.During his final years in college at Iowa State, he played semi-pro indoor with the ACCO Sportswear team for two seasons, followed by three campaigns of outdoor for East Beach as an AAA-rated beach and grass player. He has also played in five indoor USVBA Open National Championships. In the late 80s, he was a college referee and at one point was the youngest official for the Big 8 (now the Big 12).Van Vark moved to San Diego after college, heading the Rancho Bernardo High School boys’ and girls’ volleyball programs for 10 seasons. He led the Bronco girls to their only CIF volleyball title in 1994.In addition to coaching, Van Vark is the co-founder of a successful software firm called Envision Sports Inc., a statistical and technology enhancement high-tech firm focusing on volleyball. He is also the author of one of the most successful volleyball statistics packages, iVolleyStats.Van Vark earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from ISU in 1987. The Cedar Falls, Iowa, native has two children, Audrey and Jared. Games Relay visits the Duke of York Islands

first_imgBy Quintina NaimeDuke of York Islands group  is 45 minutes by boat from Kokopo and offer sport diving, snorkelling and picnics under the coconut trees.The Relay team along with the Games mascot Tura Kokomo received a traditional welcome from singsing groups and students. The baton relayed along Molot Island and dropped in at two smaller islands. These beautiful islands are undeveloped but are easily visited.The lagoons around this historical group of islands provide all-weather canoeing, wind surfing and water skiing.The baton then headed off to the Beehives in Simpso’s harbour where a youth jumped off with the baton.The relay then travelled to Kokopo for a relay around the township.last_img

Among the group was a former sprinter representing PNG in the Athens Olympics in 2004 and again in Beijing in 2008, Mae Koime.Based on the key objectives of the Olympic Day celebration this year, the Committee centred their event associating with primary and secondary school students.Meanwhile, with the 2016 Trukai Fun Run set for this Sunday, the committee concludes the celebrations today at Vabukori village in the National Capital District with another fun-filled day.The Olympic Day is marked on June 23, which was yesterday. However, the celebration was planned to coincide with the Trukai Fun Run.The NOC thanks the students and schools participation in the week-long event and hopes to extend the celebration of the event to other provinces as well in the coming years. first_imgWith Fairfax Harbour as the perfect backdrop, athletes and racing yachts will set out to sail, swim and mountain race the 3 Peaks of Moresby.Club Commodore Kilroy Genia said the RPYC is pleased to host such popular events, with this being the biggest race of the year.“This is a showcase event for the Club, which combines the endurance of runners, swimming and the A-Class racing fleet in a true athletic event.”Crews and runners all meet in the RPYC wet bar at 11am for race briefing. Boats will cross the start line at 12.30pm and race to Manubada (Local) Island, then onto Lolorua Island. The finish line will be before the RPYC marina entrance.At Manubada (Local) Island and Lolorua Island, the yachts sail up to the arrival line where the runners disembark from their boat, swim ashore and run to the check point at the top of the Island before returning to the beach for the swim back to their yacht.Once across the finish line, the runners leap ashore at the marina, and make their way out of the yacht club to commence the gruelling Burns Peak leg.Runners test their stamina on the race to the summit of Burns Peak. Runners then race back to RPYC grounds and the finish line where spectators will be ready at the Boat Shed SP Radler finish line to cheer the exhausted runner home.There are fantastic prizes on offer for fastest boats, fastest runners and give aways for everyone who enters.RPYC general manager, Aaron Batts, is overwhelmed with the support of sponsors.
